Applying for your foreign retirement pension

Have you been employed abroad as a salaried worker? Here is a set of pointers to use when applying for your retirement pension.

No retirement pension is granted automatically.

You will need to request a pension application form from the appropriate pension authority, fill it out, and send it back. The pension authority you will need to go through is determined by your place of residence.

If you are residing in a country in which European regulations apply, you will need to submit your application either:

  • To the pension fund in your country of residence,
  • Or to the pension fund in the last location where you were employed in France.

Pursuant to European regulations, if you have belonged to more than one (basic French) retirement pension scheme, the last scheme to which you have belonged will liaise between the other French schemes and the foreign scheme(s).

If you are residing in a country that has signed a Social Security agreement with France, submit your application to the pension authority in your country of residence

If you are residing in a country that has not signed a Social Security agreement with France, you can apply for your retirement pension online using our website.

If you are residing in a country that has not signed a Social Security agreement with France, you can apply for your retirement pension online using our website.

If you are residing in France, please contact the fund (Carsat, Cnav, or CGSS) of your place of residence to get the appropriate form, which is determined by your country. Your regional fund will then forward your application to all of the retirement pension funds in the countries in which you have entitlements.

If you have only had self-employed status, your retirement pension will be calculated in coordination with the 27 European Union member States, as well as Andorra, Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Iceland, India, Japan, Liechtenstein, Morocco, New Caledonia, Norway, Polynesia, Saint Pierre et Miquelon, South Korea, Switzerland, the United States, and Uruguay. If your country of residence is not listed, please submit your pension application online or by mail to the last regional fund to which you paid contributions in France.

We advise you to contact the competent fund 6 months prior to the date you choose as the effective date for your retirement pension.

  • If you live in another country during your retirement, we will require you to submit proof of existence each year in order to continue paying your pension. This paperwork is essential. If your pension fund does not receive your proof of existence, it will suspend payment of your pension.
